Ranks of Honor

The members of the Seekers Guild value Honor above all else. Whatever aspects of Dereth any one Seeker enjoys most, whether it be questing and collecting, leveling and progressing, or researching and writing, the attention to Honor rises above all else and binds us together. These quests for Ranks of Honor provide a guide with which to focus our efforts to become more worldly and educated citizens of Dereth.

The requirements for the Ranks are divided into two categories. The Quests require Seekers to obtain various unique items scattered throughout the vast land of Dereth. Some of these items are specific to certain classes or require certain skill-levels to acquire. Others are readily available to all, but may prove to test the patience and endurance of the Seekers. The Projects are more general in their nature and require Seekers to evaluate their experiences in Dereth. Although the completion of some of them may result in a tangible trophy, their purpose is reflection and wisdom.

As Seekers progress through the Ranks, the hope is that they will become more intuitive and understanding of the world into which they have been drawn. As their eyes, minds, and hearts open, so they will embody the true spirit of the Seekers Guild.

Rules

  • To obtain a rank, a Seeker must complete a total of ten items, using a combination of Quests and Projects. You must choose at least three Quests and three Projects, but after that you can divide your tasks however you would like.

  • Regarding the Quests, only one or two have been designated as "solo-only" quests. The rest may be done as a group, if you would like. However, please keep in mind that the point is to experience the thrill of working towards a goal and then seeing it through. Please don’t deprive yourself of this pleasure by circumventing it. Whenever possible, obtain the items yourself, rather than trading for them or their parts.

  • For Seekers who have already obtained items such as Composite Bows or Atlan Weapons, which require skill-checks to obtain, you do not have to recreate these items in order to count them towards your ranks. Whenever possible, though, it is encouraged that you obtain items anew, even if you already have them.

  • Regarding the Projects, you may repeat any option as often as you would like, but it is recommended that you try as many as you can. You are also limited to one of each project per rank (i.e., you cannot create two tour guides for Explorer, but you can create one tour guide for Explorer and a different tour guide for Adventurer). Most of the projects involve a written portion, which can be posted in the Hall of Heros, or you can create your own independent web site. As with the quests, you will get out of the projects what you put into them.

  • Everyone, regardless of level, must receive each rank in order to progress to the next one. The levels given for the Quests are recommendations only! They are based on the projected difficulty of the quest material, as well as level restrictions on some of the dungeons. These projections may not fit with your actual experiences. Also, you need not wait until you are a certain level in order to begin working on future ranks. For example, if you are level 15, and you happen to kill a monster with a SIK on it, you can count it towards becoming an Adventurer. You still must receive the rank of Explorer first, but you can save the SIK for later.

  • You must complete quests with the character receiving the rank in order for the rank to be valid. If you are high-level and want to do a quest that requires a previous quest item that you cannot obtain due to level restrictions, you can either trade for the previous item, or use a secondary character to retrieve it for you. You cannot, however, count both the previous item AND the new item towards your rank, only the new item. For example, say your main character would like a SoLL, but you are too high to retrieve the first six keys. You may trade for them or send another character of yours to get them so that your main can get the sword. You cannot count the first six SoLL keys towards your rank of Explorer, but you CAN count the SoLL towards your rank of Adventurer, because your main did not actually get the first six keys, but did actually use them in the last dungeon to get the sword.
  • Every Seeker is on his or her honor as to the successful and honest completion of these quests and projects. You do not need witnesses to actually stand by and take notes as you get pummeled to death. If you work hard and rise to a challenge, your pride will speak for itself.

  • You may obtain Quest Items that do not directly benefit your character and count them towards your ranks. For example, an archer may obtain a SoLL and count it towards the rank of Adventurer. You are encouraged to keep the items you obtain for your own private collection, but it is not required.

  • When you are ready to receive a new rank, please submit a message to the Seekers Forum listing the quests and projects you have completed, in the same manner (and possibly at the same time) as you periodically update your stats and skills. If there are no obvious problems or disputes, your rank will be updated on your character profile.

    Substitutions

In recognition of the wide variance between characters and the addition of new game content over time, Seekers will be allowed to substitute certain quest items for ones already given in the Rank Quests, provided that these quest items meet the following conditions:

  • You may make only one substitution per Rank.

  • You may substitute one item for one item, or one quest for one quest (as some Quests require the obtainment of multiple items or the completion of several mini-quests).

  • Substitutions must be reasonably equitable. For example, you cannot substitute a random-drop item such as those found in the "grab-bag" quests for an item that can only be acquired viz the completion of a brutal quest. Random-drop items can only be substituted for other random-drop items, quest items only for similar-difficulty quest items, and so on.

  • You cannot make substitutions for quest items listed in RED.

The purpose of the Ranks of Honor is to experience all that Dereth has to offer, and to increase knowledge and understanding through these experiences. Enjoy the journey, and good luck!

    Quests

All of the Quests are rank-specific, but some Quests for higher Ranks require the completion of Quests from lower Ranks. It is recommended that you review and research all the Quests before you start, as some of the dungeons have level restrictions which may hinder you if you wait too long. The Projects are listed in a separate section, following the Quests.

    Projects

    1. Write a story about your character. Include the history behind your name, details of your past in Ispar, your skills (and why you chose them), your goals (and why they’re important for your progress), and of course, your personality. Consider starting a chart to keep track of your progress, or keeping your records in a file somewhere. They may come in handy in the future.

    2. Design a website for your character. Include stories you have written, any art you have composed, screenshots of quest items you have obtained, etc; your special scrapbook of your achievements. Note: The initial creation and setup of the website counts for one credit (choosing an appropriate background, color scheme, font face, layout). If you post subsequent character-specific works to it, they each count for a credit.

    3. Visit one Sho town, one Aluvian town, and one Gharu town. Write about your observations regarding the similarities and differences between them.

    4. Create a tour guide for any town. Visit the local scribe or barkeep and learn some of the local lore. Take screenshots of the town, its most notable NPC’s, and the surrounding landscape. Describe what you think is the best hunting spot or dungeon in the area.

    5. Write a general guide to any dungeon, your favorite outdoor hunting spot, or a strategy guide for some aspect of the hunting process (“The Do’s and Don’ts of Bunny Hunting”). Describe the monsters, what loot they drop, and the best weapon type to use. If there is a quest involved, briefly describe it.

    6. Create some Lore about the history of the Seekers Guild. How did we come together? What cosmic forces combined so that we all met up in the same place at the same time?

    7. Write lore about a Guild-sponsored event. What motivated the guide to organize it? Who participated, and what was their motivation? Did anything unexpected happen?

    8. Write a story about an honorable deed performed by another Seeker.

    9. Choose a personal, lifelong goal for your character and write about it. When you’re not busy leveling, what are you up to? What is the reason Asheron called you?

    10. Invite another Seeker to explore a new hunting area or dungeon with you that is reasonably challenging for your level, and then gradually work on your skills so that you can solo it by the time you reach the recommended level cap of the rank you are working towards. Write about your adventures.

    11. Create art associated with your character. Draw a self-portrait, or an original sketch based on a screenshot.

    12. Write a quest guide. Include a thorough walkthrough of all the necessary preparations, dungeons, and NPC locations. Include information about the stats of the quest item, what critters you will encounter, how long it will take if everything goes well, and what kind of group would be best (if a group is needed). If you are doing this as part of a Guild-sponsored quest that you are leading, this is a required step of that process and does not count as a separate credit.

    13. Perform an extraordinarily good deed for someone and write about it. Don’t be afraid to brag a little.

    14. Assist another Seeker in obtaining a quest item (that you already have or aren’t interested in having) or recovering a corpse (or corpses), separate from going on a Guild-sponsored quest. This is a wonderful opportunity for players of higher rank to assist players of lower rank in their progress.

    15. Research a specific piece of lore and present an essay of your findings and interpretations.

    16. Multi-character development. Create at least two characters of different classes (archer, mage, and warrior), and develop each to at least level 25. Write about your observations.

    17. Write a story that pulls some aspect of real life into Dereth. Think about what is affecting your life at any given time, and write about how your character would react to that situation.

    18. Write a guide for how to make a character like your main. Why did you choose your particular skills, and what purpose will they serve? Persuade your audience that your character is the best possible character they could have (“My character has Thrown Weapons, Cooking, and Assess Person specialized, and this is the BEST character you could possibly have!”). Discuss the future development of your character, and chart his/her progress.

    19. For the mathematically-inclined, write an essay explaining the Math behind some aspect of skill development or a quest. Ideas (not limited to these options): a) Carry out a scientific experiment to determine, for example, the mote drop-rate for various types of golems; b) Mathematically project the progress of your character and then chart it as you go along; c) Choose an aspect of the code and elaborate on how it works/doesn't work/could be better or more efficient; d) Write a program that supplements AC, but isn't necessarily a 3rd-party program (doesn't directly interact with the client).

    20. Create a real-object resume for your tradesmule. Alchemist has a complete set of oils and dyes, a HQ Ingot, an excellent oiled string, plus the Alchemy Hat; Fletcher has a complete set of all the arrow types (including barbed and crystal-tip), carved bones, and the Fletcher Hat; Cook has a complete set of dyed robes, expertly cured sinews, a variety of mouth-watering dishes, and the Iron Chef hat.
